Fröjel: Viking port

Fröjel is one of Gotland’s best-explored central harbour sites: a trade and manufacturing hub located on the west coast some 40km south of Visby (Figure 11.2). More than 10 years of research and excavation have yielded large quantities of varied material which can help us to understand Viking-Age trade and handicraft production on Gotland, despite the fact that less than 2% of the port’s surface area has been investigated to date.8
